Chapter Twelve
Lila ignored Bethany’s words completely. “I got us a cabin with two beds and running water. The best news is that the pools are full of hot water so we can soak away our aches and pains before bed.”
Bethany’s excited expression turned to one of confusion. “Didn’t you hear me? I got us a ride all the way home tonight! Think about that Lila, you could be with your kids in less than four hours from now. Sleeping in your own bed, safe and sound. No more scootering. No more wondering what’s happening with your family but actually there tonight!”
Lila looked over Bethany’s shoulder at the two men who continued to stare at them and suppressed a shudder of uneasiness. She met Bethany’s eyes with a serious look.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea. Those guys are junkies, Bethany. They’re dangerous. We can’t go anywhere with them if we want to live for more than a few hours.”
Bethany rolled her eyes and glanced over her shoulder at the two men, sending them a finger wave before turning back to Lila.
“Puh-leeze, they might be the type of guys who need to unzip their pants to count past twenty but I can handle them. Trust me, I’ve handled worse men than those two. I’m serious Lila. They even have extra gas cans in the back of their truck. They’re headed to Calgary tonight. This nightmare journey will be over if we go with them.”
Lila shook her head firmly. “There’s no way I’m going anywhere with those two and if you value your life you won’t either.” Seeing the stubborn look fill Bethany’s face she tried a different tact. “Look, why can’t we just spend the night here and if they want to give us a ride we can leave in the morning after a good night’s sleep? That makes a lot more sense than starting a four-hour drive now when we only have an hour of daylight left in the day.”
Bethany huffed out a breath of annoyance. “They don’t want to stay here tonight. Apparently, the guy inside is insisting on cash only or people need to sleep outside on the ground. They just want to head home to Calgary tonight instead of sleeping outside with the bugs and the bears.” She reached out and clutched both of Lila’s shoulders. “Come on, this is our chance. You said it yourself that we’re going to end up slowing down tomorrow and for the rest of the trip with the mountain passes and our bodies breaking down. It only makes sense for us to take this chance and get home tonight instead of spending the next week in agony. We can handle these guys, I promise.”
Lila saw that she wasn’t going to change Bethany’s mind no matter what she said so she stepped back away from her causing the other woman’s arms to drop down to her side.
“I wish you wouldn’t go but I understand why. I truly hope that you sleep in
